Telling a Story:

 

For this project, I collected eight different data sets all related to the topic of reported injuries in Canada for the year 2017. Combined with secondary research, I developed a hypothesis to explore.

 

The high number of injury hospitalizations in children ranging from the ages of 0 to 4 is relative to the conditions of their environment.

Safety Of The Home

  • The home has almost 15,000 more reported injured than any other location.
     

  • There are over 10,000 more reported injuries in the home for the age range of 0 to 4 compared to any other age group.
     

  • The home is meant to be a safe environment, but still, a large number of injuries are being reported.

Locating The Problems

  • The two highest numbers of reported injuries occur in the living room (6,516 injuries) and the bedroom (4,974 injuries).
     

  • When comparing the infant/toddler age range to other groups, the number is over tripled in comparison.
     

  • Using the data to narrow down the focus gives more precise locations where the majority of these injuries occur is the beginning of establishing some sort of preventative measures to bring these numbers down.

Where Does It Hurt?

  • The head, brain, and upper body account for the majority of reported injuries with the head being the highest (10,860 cases).

With analyzing the data and creating visualizations, I was able to tell a story. The story this data tells us is there are a substantial amount of preventable injuries that occur within the home for children in the age group of 0 to 4.

 

If I were to take this project to the next step, I would have to ask why this is happening and what can be done to prevent and reduce these alarming numbers.
